FAQ
What is GMB Midlands Motor Drivers’ Fund?

The Motor Drivers’ Fund (MDF) is a fund that covers motoring incidents and fines (conditions apply, please see below).

What does it cover?

Members of the fund can secure financial help for a range of motoring incidents they might navigate on their journeys. This embraces parking fines, speeding penalties, Bus Lane Penalty Charge Notices (PCN), and more, providing a financial buffer in times of unexpected road-related expenditures.

Not only does the fund provide assistance for incidents occurring within the United Kingdom, but it also addresses Police Court Proceedings. However, it’s crucial to note that incidents that occurred prior to the date of acceptance and registration in the Fund are not covered.

What isn’t covered?

The GMB Motor Drivers’ Fund provides extensive support, yet there are exclusions to note:

Parking offences: only fines for up to two parking offences within a 12-month span are potentially covered, and only if mitigating circumstances, as assessed by the Regional Committee, are present.

Specific exclusions: the fund does not cover incidents or fines arising from logbook offences, operating without the legally required insurance, any drink/drug related offences, or instances of wilful neglect/criminal activity.

Legal costs: only those incurred using the fund’s provided solicitors are covered. If you choose to use your own solicitor, those costs will not be covered by the fund.

Who is eligible?

Only GMB members can access the fund. If you’re not a member yet but want access to the Motor Drivers’ fund and other benefits, join GMB today.

Anyone who wants to make a claim needs to hold a full, current UK driving licence.

How do I make a claim?

You can make a claim using our online form. You need to provide relevant details about the incident, conviction, any loss of earnings, impact on employment, the amount of any court imposed fine (with receipt), and any other relevant information. The regional committee finalises the decision on the provision and amount of a grant.

When can I make a claim?

You can make a claim for incidents that occur after your membership in the GMB Motor Drivers’ Fund has been officially accepted and registered. Specifically, any incidents that happen prior to the exact date and time of your acceptance and registration and not eligible for a claim. Make sure to check your registration confirmation details to understand from which point onward your coverage is active.

How much does it cost?

£0.25 per week
£1.08 per month

Your contributions facilitate the fund in being a self-supporting resource, separate and distinct from other Union Funds, providing you with financial and legal support during unexpected motoring incidents.

Do I need an insurance?

Yes, maintaining insurance coverage as mandated by current road traffic laws is essential. The Motor Drivers’ Fund (MDF) is not an insurance policy. Instead, it provides additional support by covering certain motoring fines and incidents (subject to specific rules*), offering an extra financial safety net.
